Emilie Heymans scores perfect 10 in women's tower victory at Summer Nationals and World Cup Trials

June 26, 2006

Emilie Heymans of St-Lambert, Que., saved her best for last as she earned a perfect 10 on her final dive to win the gold medal on women’s 10-metre tower Sunday at the World Cup Trials and Summer Nationals diving competition.

Heymans totaled 1,093.20 points over the preliminaries, semifinals and final for her 25th career national title. On her last dive, an inward three and a half, she earned one 10 from the judges along with five 9.5’s and a 9.0. Marie-Ève Marleau of Laval, Que., was second at 1,014.80 and 13-year-old Rachel Kemp of Victoria third at 930.70.Heymans and Marleau qualified for World Cup team in the event.

‘’That last dive is one that is usually consistently strong for me,’’ said Heymans, the 2003 world champion on tower. ‘’That’s why I put it last. No matter how the competition is going I always know I have that dive that I’m comfortable with. I was also pleased with my back three and half earlier on which I had trouble with in the prelims and semis.’’

Marleau competed just last week at a Grand Prix in Rome where she placed fifth. She posted her highest ever result at the senior nationals.

‘’I’m super pleased,’’ said Marleau. ‘’Out of 15 dives through the entire competition, I didn’t miss one. I knew I was in a tough situation after such a long trip but I still felt I had a chance to make the World Cup team.’’

In women’s 10-metre synchro, Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal, world championship bronze medalists last year, took the title with 315.00 points.

‘’It went very well considering we didn’t practice that much together heading in,’’ said Filion. ‘’We were focusing on our individual events because those were the main qualifying events for the World Cup. We delivered a superior performance to what we did at the Canada Cup Grand Prix (last month).’’

Nine divers were named to the Canadian team for the World Cup July 19-23 in Changshu, China. For the women it’s Heymans ( 10-metre, three-meter and three-meter synchro), Marleau (10-metre), Blythe Hartley of Calgary (three-meter, three-meter synchro), Filion and Benfeito (10-metre synchro) and for the men Miranda (three-meter), Abate (three-meter), Seen (10-metre synchro) and Wegadesk Gorup-Paul of Victoria (10-metre and 10-metre synchro).
